The Ohio State University Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Nutrition - OSUN

Welcome!

Jeff Firkins
Dr. Jeff Firkins
Director

The Ohio State University Nutrition Ph.D. Program is a cooperative effort involving four colleges, including Education and Human Ecology; Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences; Medicine; and Veterinary Medicine.

This Interdisciplinary Program was established in 1996 and continues to grow. Currently, over 40 OSU graduate faculty are associated with this program, and other faculty who are involved in projects related to nutrition will be joining the program in the near future.

OSU Nutrition faculty members offer research opportunities in nutritional biochemistry, cellular and molecular nutrition, clinical nutrition, and experimental and applied human and animal nutrition.

The OSU Nutrition Ph.D. Program is designed to provide a plan of course work as well as experiential learning activities that will prepare students for the interdisciplinary nature of modern Nutrition Science, equip the student to adapt to the constantly developing and changing methods in quantitative and qualitative research in nutrition sciences and provide the student with the oral and written communication skills required for the competitive job market. The OSU Nutrition Ph.D. Program is the only program of its kind in the State of Ohio.

The doctoral program of study is planned by the student and the adviser in consultation with a faculty advisory committee. At least 90 quarter credits of graduate study are required beyond the M.S. degree or 135 beyond the B.S. degree when the M.S. is by-passed by the exceptional B.S. student who enters the program directly. Depending on previous training, students may be required to take core courses in nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, and statistics. Students individualize their programs by taking courses supporting their chosen research or projected career areas, research credits, seminars, and workshops or individual studies related to development of specific skills needed in the future. Creative research and the development of strong oral and written communication skills are emphasized. Diverse courses are available in related programs in the basic and applied sciences on the OSU main campus.
