Office of Diversity, Urban,
and International/Global Affairs (DUI/G)
Mission:
The Office of Diversity, Urban, and International/Global Affairs provides leadership, oversight, and an infrastructure for the new College of Education and Human Ecology with respect to its diversity and urban and international/global initiatives. The key objective is to help the various units of the college diversify our student body, faculty, staff, and programs to foster a climate that recognizes and celebrates cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, linguistic, socio-linguistic, sexual orientation, and other diversity in our college community. We see ourselves as a supportive resource for the Schools and Departments where faculty and staff are hired, students are recruited and graduated, and a wide variety of diversity programs are delivered. We also sponsor college-wide diversity, urban, and international/global activities (such as the annual Autumn Quarter welcome and orientation for new diverse students; the annual diversity breakfast held at the annual American Educational Research Conference in various U.S. cities; and an annual Spring Quarter Graduate Student Forum and Diversity Symposium).
Office of Equity and Diversity:
The mission of the College's Office of Equity and Diversity includes four priorities linked to the other offices in DUI/G:
- Introducing all students in the college to students from diverse backgrounds
- Providing academic and cultural support for faculty, staff, and students
- Promoting positive awareness throughout the college for the value of diversity in our academic community - students, faculty, staff, administrators, teachers, parents, and the general public
- Increasing everyone's awareness of how ethnic, cultural, and other forms of diversity impact society through education, especially teacher education
Office of Urban Affairs:
The mission of the College's Office of Urban Affairs includes four proprieties linked to those of the other offices in DUI/G.
- providing opportunities for sustained partnerships with urban school districts and urban students (e.g., the five-year federally funded Teacher Quality Enhancement Project, TQE)
- conducting research that impacts urban student achievement
- preparing well-prepared individuals (classroom teachers, school psychologists, school counselors, school nurses, administrators, and other community support personnel)
- working collaboratively with other units of this university to provide research and development initiatives to impact urban schools, families, and communities (e.g., the OSU Kirwin Institute on Race and Ethnicity in America, Office of Minority Affairs, P-12 Initiative, College of Social Work)
Office of International/Global Affairs:
The mission of the College's Office of International/Global Affairs is to expose the students, staff, and faculty of the College to the world outside of the U.S. to help them understand and develop a global perspective. This Office has four priorities linked to those of the other DUI/G offices:
- provide leadership in the College for students, staff, faculty, and administrators to educate members of our academic community about the interconnectedness of the world
- foster programs that provide opportunities for members of our community to experience international/global contacts first-hand through travel, research, teaching, and study abroad in both short-term and long-term ways
- celebrate and support international/global students and visiting scholars in the College
- provide support for programs and individuals currently engaged in or wish to become involved with international/global initiatives in major world areas identified by the College as "hubs" for key involvements in the next five to ten years (e.g., Asia, Africa, South/Central America, Europe).
