Sigma Xi Winter NewZ!

Good Day Everyone!

Wow, it feels like it's been so long since our last get together. I had all intentions of attending our fall lecture but had a little mishap at work and was sitting in the emergency room in Bowie getting some very painful splinters removed. I heard through the grapevine that the topic was well liked by all and very informative. I also feel like its been so long because I did not have the time to write the last newsletter or help with event planning as I was planning my own big event, thus the change in my name!

We actually had a speaker lined up for our winter meeting last summer, but alas, he moved to Florida… ah well. We then got in touch with others but couldn't find a person with availability to speak to us, and that is the hinge for booking a location and catering etc. After a fairly long search we have gotten Dr. Paul Fofonoff from the Smithsonian's Environmental Research Center at Edgewater to speak to us. His topic is "Invasive Species of the Chesapeake Bay".

For a change in venue completely I am trying something new to our group. This lecture will be on Sunday March 7, 2pm. At the Patuxent Wildlife Center which is on Powder Mill Rd near the Rt 197 end of the road. We will serve a luncheon prior to our members and their guests but the general public will be invited to attend the lecture. Given that night travel in the winter months is usually fraught with ice and darkness we have pushed the lecture into March and we will try a Sunday afternoon.

We are serving a light lunch at 1pm catered by Casual Caterers. Ham and provolone or turkey and swiss sandwiches along with both a pasta and baby greens salads. Chocolate Walnut brownies will be served for dessert, iced tea and lemonade served also.

Directions:

The Patuxent Wildlife National visotor's Center has a wonderful walk through museum about wildlife around the region, as well as walking paths, a bird watching indoor station and gift shop. They are open 9:30-5pm so plan on coming early to tour the facility!

***Also put May 14th on your Calendars! I am putting together our Annual Banquet, more information as soon as I get all details put together! RSVP ASAP! By February 25, 2004
