COLLEGE RECOGNITION

The March of Dimes will honor Dr. Peter Mercer at its Harvest Ball Friday, November 14 at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton. More than 400 executives from area corporations and prominent Bergen County citizens will join the March of Dimes to pay tribute to Dr. Mercer, who will be recognized with the Golden Harvest Award for playing an integral part of moving the March of Dimes mission forward. The event benefits the organization's mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.

Photo: Kathleen YeatonTimothy Burns and Kathryn Yeaton (ASB) were the main speakers at a shared services workshop in Washington, D.C. in October.  The audience was comprised of top-level federal government employees (CEOs, CIOs, CFOs, etc.) from several federal agencies.  They discussed their report, "Success Factors in Implementing Government Shared Services," produced as a result of a grant they received from the IBM Business of Government organization. Marianne Homsey (Student Health Services) was awarded a Dean's Grant from Teachers College, Columbia University to conduct her dissertation research, "Successful Strategies for Treatment ofInsomnia."  She is a doctoral candidate in the Nursing Education Program at Teachers College and expects to complete her Ed.D. in 2009.

Corzine to the New Jersey Arab-American Heritage Commission.  The 25-member commission will coordinate events observing the heritage, culture and history of Arab-Americans and will work with schools on curricula. Photo: Judith PeckArtwork by Judith Peck (CA) is on exhibit at the Lana Santorelli Gallery, 110 W. 26 St., Manhattan as part of a show titled "Small Works."  The exhibition continues through November 25.  Peck's over-life-sized steel sculpture, "Reclining Woman Black," was chosen for Artscape: an Exhibition of Public Art in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a year-long outdoor display of public art sponsored by the City of Pittsfield.  In addition, she has been named "Feature Artist" for November by Santa Fe Art World, an organization of professional national and international artists.  Her 3-figure outdoor sculpture grouping with cabin, "Appalachia," continues on view at the Erika and David Boyd Sculpture Garden in Leonia, New Jersey. Photo: Eric WienerIn August, Eric Wiener (TAS) taught a graduate course in Portuguese at O Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (Manaus, Brazil), which is the largest research institution in the Amazon basin of South America.  The course, "Delineamento Experimental e Métodos Estatísticos para Pesquisas de Campo"("Experimental Design and Statistical Methods for Field Studies"), combined theory with intensive learning Photo: Jillian Weissexperiences in the field to help Brazilian graduate students from a variety of environmental disciplines develop their research skills. In October, Jillian Weiss (SSHS) had a post on the Harvard Business Review blog, http://conversationstarter.hbsp.com/2008/10/if_women_were_more_like_men.html. It concerned an economic study of transgender workers and contains a link to a case study that will be published in December by the Harvard Business Review. Weiss helped the publication write the case and find the experts cited. (photo right)

STUDENT AND ALUMNI NEWS

Brent Bergholm of the band Hsu-nami reports that the group was featured on MTV's "Radar, " a show that focuses on world music.  It was aired online and on MTV U/MTV2.  MTV attended Hsu-nami's performance at Pianos on October 9 and videotaped it.

Rosetta D'Angelo (AIS) announced that seven Ramapo College students attended the National Italian American Foundation Convention in Washington D.C.  The students, all minoring in Italian, are Angelina Aucello, Cristina Bandino, Jacqueline Cislo, Christina Luzzi, Danielle McCartan, Briana Sarapochillo and Matthew Sullivan.  They participated in workshops on Italian studies and Advanced Placement exams organized by Matilda Cuomo, and attended activities at the Italian Embassy and met with well-known Italian-Americans including Judge Alito, Rudy Giuliani, Gina Lollobrigida and Nancy Pelosi.

Lisa Lutter (CA) reports that the College's choral ensemble, CantaNOVA, will perform five musical selections under her direction with pianist Itay Goren (CA) Sunday, November 9 at 3 p.m. at the New York Times Center in Manhattan.  This event commemorates the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the prelude to the holocaust, and is titled:  "Remembrance and Awareness:  The Unkept Promise of ‘Never Again.'"  The event establishes a link between Kristallnacht and ensuing genocides in Rwanda, Cambodia, Guatemala and Darfur.  Speakers include Michael Riff (AIS).  The event is free and open to the public.  

Robert Rose, Class of 2007, finished 17th in his class of 134 at Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, Virginia and was awarded a $12,000 scholarship for the second year.  He was appointed as an intern with the American Center For Law and Justice.  His father, Joseph, is a CA adjunct professor at Ramapo.
