Legacy Anonymous FTP Account: Hints, Common Problems and Solutions

    (1) If you have problems using FTP to our site, or just want to suppress 
    the welcome messages produced by ftp when you cd into directories, try 
    putting a "-" sign before your e-mail address which you are asked for 
    at the password prompt: e.g., type "-user@node.group.edu" (without the
    quotes) when prompted.

    (3) If you have problems or questions about specific directories or

    (4) If you want to peruse the contents of a file such as a README file
    without actually making a permanent copy on your own machine, and
    your computer has a Unix or Ultrix operating system, simply type:
    get README -    OR    get README | more

    (5) Short delays (~<1 minute) may sometimes be encountered when accessing 
    our site: this will usually be due to our Webserver being busier than 
    normal. If the problem persists, or if the delays are
    longer than this, please contact the HEASARC using the

    (6) An "ls" command to the HEASARC's FTP server will not list the
    sub-directories in a directory, only the files. To see the entire
    contents of a directory in the usual Unix-like style, please use
    either the "ls -l" or "dir" commands instead.

    (7) If one or more of the RAID disk systems go down, the directories that
    are physically located on the affected disks will appear to be empty: the 
    user should try again a short while later, as these problems are often
    transitory, and if the problem persists, contact the HEASARC using the

    (8) THE BEST TIME TO TRANSFER LARGE AMOUNTS OF DATA FROM LEGACY IS 
    BETWEEN 5:00 and 11:00 UT (I.E., MIDNIGHT AND 6:00 AM EST).
