Materials Science Laboratory (MSL)

Facility Description

MSL building and flagsThe Materials Science Laboratory (MSL) is operated by the Materials Science and Technology Division and serves as a focal point for integrating Los Alamos National Laboratory's broadly based capabilities in materials science. Because the MSL is located outside of security fences, it has been specially configured to aid in the sharing of Los Alamos technologies with industry.

entrance to msl buildingThe 56,000 square foot facility consists of twenty-three laboratories (14,000 square feet) dedicated to research and applications in four focus areas:

  • mechanical behavior in extreme environments,
  • materials processing,
  • advanced materials development, and
  • materials characterization.

Research is supported in several areas, including

  • advanced materials synthesis,
  • organo-metallic chemistry,
  • single crystal synthesis,
  • nanocrystalline materials synthesis,
  • corrosion compatibility,
  • experimental mechanics,
  • dynamic mechanical testing,
  • nanoindentation,
  • high-temperature superconductivity,
  • laser processing,
  • machining,
  • surface analysis,
  • spectroscopy,
  • microwave processing,
  • advanced thermomechanical processing, and
  • materials property and process modeling.
