Group instrumental in obtaining funds for Math and Science Academy

Richard Martinez, D-Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, were recognized by the Laboratory for their efforts in obtaining state funds for the Math and Science Academy. The academy is a program of the Northern New Mexico Council for Excellence in Education of which the Laboratory is a partner. The legislators were recognized at the reception for securing $200,000 in state funds for the Math and Science Academy from the 2005 State Legislature. Since the academy was created, nearly $600,000 in state funds have been acquired. The state funds are used to pay for teacher stipends. The Math and Science Academy was created in 2000 and has been expanded to five Northern New Mexico school districts with 100 teacher participants.
