Labor Department Awards $3 Million to I/Tech Computer Services Corporation for High-Tech Training

FREDERICK, Md. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration has awarded $3 million to I/Tech Computer Services Corporation to train 1,200 individuals for careers within the information technology sector.

"This Administration is committed to helping workers get the training they need to get good paying jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This $3 million grant will be used to upgrade the skills of workers."

Frederick, Md.-based I/Tech Computer Services will use the Labor Department grant to train approximately 785 employees of Wachovia and 350 employees of FleetBoston in database development, programming, security, telecommunications and web development.

The project will provide a wide variety of industry standard certifications. Training, directed by partnering employers, will be at the highest level and customized to the needs of individual students. The majority of trainees will possess a bachelor's degree and some may have a master's or other advanced degrees.

Partnering employers plan to provide $4,727,288 in project support and to help training providers continue training after the grant's completion.

"This grant illustrates the kind of workforce development partnerships we are encouraging to address the challenges facing 21st century businesses," said Emily Stover DeRocco, assistant secretary of labor for employment and training. "When businesses identify the skills their workforce needs, educators and our public workforce system can be key players in preparing workers for the highly skilled jobs in high-demand fields."

This grant and others totaling approximately $49 million were awarded competitively to business-led partnerships nationwide to train workers for high-skill, high-tech occupations.
