In March 2004, the Environmental Health Services Branch collaborated with
scientists from the Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch, the Division of
Environmental Hazards and Health Effects, and the Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry to visit La Oroya, Peru. The team assessed conditions that
may be contributing to reported health complaints and elevated blood lead levels
in the smelter community of La Oroya.
