Icebergs around South Georgia Island

Enormous icebergs drift past South Georgia Island in the Southern Ocean, many of them as big as the island itself. Icebergs such as these are “calved” every year, usually during the spring and summer, when Antarctic glaciers crack and drop pieces into the water. This true-color Aqua MODIS image was acquired on August 19, 2003. For images of recently-calved icebergs, please visit the Rapid Response Gallery.
