General Information

Because Ramapo is a state-assisted college, the cost of attending is affordable compared to many other institutions. There are three forms of student financial aid for which application can be made:

  • Grants
  • Loans
  • Work/Study Payments

The package offered to a student is determined by financial need and college year.

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Students must first fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available from their guidance counselors or online before being considered for financial aid.

Book Advances
Estimated financial aid is not disbursed (actualized) until one week after the 50% refund period has ended. Therefore, financial aid recipients, whose disbursed financial aid will create a credit balance on their College account, may go to the College Bookstore and purchase their textbooks and course related material and supplies prior to the disbursement date.

A student must first go to the Office of Financial Aid to see if they are eligible for a Book Advance. If a student qualifies, a Book Advance transaction will be posted to the student’s College account. The Bursar’s Office will transmit a Book Advance transaction file each day to the Bookstore. A student will not be permitted to make purchases until the following day when the bookstore opens its doors. An EOF student must first see their EOF counselor before a Book Advance can be posted to their account by the Office of Financial Aid. Click on the Deadlines button below for the first day that purchases can be made.

A student may purchase ONLY textbooks and course related materials and supplies with their Book Advance monies. When a student completes their purchase(s), they may proceed to any cash register for checkout. Book advance purchases cannot be made without a valid form of picture I.D.  (Student I.D. card, driver's license with picture, or credit card with picture). Each purchase will be posted on-line to the student’s account in the Bookstore system. Each purchase will reduce the amount available in the student’s Book Advance. A student may continue to make purchases up to the balance in their account.

If a student needs to increase their Book Advance, they must first return to the Office of Financial Aid. If the student qualifies for an increase, a Book Advance transaction will be posted to the student’s College account. The Bursar’s Office will transmit a Book Advance transaction file each day to the Bookstore. A student will not be permitted to make purchases until the following day when the bookstore opens its doors. An EOF student must return to your counselor before a Book Advance increase can be posted to their account by the Office of Financial Aid.

NO CASH REFUNDS will be made on Book Advance purchases. If a student returns books or school supplies, their Bookstore account will be reimbursed. Click on the Deadlines button below for the last day that purchases can be made. The Bursar’s Office will adjust each student’s account to reflect the net purchases made in the Bookstore. For example, if the Book Advance was for $350 and the total purchases were $317.79, the student’s account will reflect only the $317.79 amount.

The College reserves the right to change costs and procedures at its discretion.

Finance Your Education at Ramapo

Education after high school costs time, money, and effort. It’s a big investment, but well worth it. At Ramapo College of New Jersey, we help students manage their costs through a combination of federal, state, and institutional funds.

About 67 percent of Ramapo’s students receive more than $40 million in aid. This aid includes grants – funds which the students are awarded but don’t have to pay back – and loans, which must be repaid. Students also can receive a work-study job to earn money to help pay for school.
Academic Achievement Scholarships

Depending upon need, undergraduate students may receive a

  • Federal Pell Grant (maximum amount of the grant, $4,310 in 2007-08)
    or
  • New Jersey Tuition Grant (TAG) if they are state residents (maximum amount of grant, $6,578 in 2007-08 at Ramapo College).

Students also may receive as much as $1,400 per year as an Educational Opportunity Fund grant recipient if they are from areas judged to be economically and educationally disadvantaged.
Educational Opportunity Fund

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants for Pell-eligible students and Federal College Work Study funds may also be available.
A wide variety of loans are available for undergraduates, including Stafford, PLUS, and Perkins. The popular Stafford Loan provides dependent freshmen students with as much as $3,500, with up to $4,500 for sophomores and up to $5,500 for juniors and seniors. Independent students may be eligible for additional loan funds. Students can qualify for an unsubsidized Stafford Loan regardless of their income, or their family’s income.

Graduate students may receive Stafford and Perkins Loans, and are eligible for Federal College Work Study.

Eligibility for Federal and State aid includes demonstration of financial need, possession of a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate, and enrollment as a matriculating (admitted to the College) student. Students must have a valid Social Security Number; register with Selective Service if required; make satisfactory academic progress while in school; and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a U.S. permanent resident who has an Alien Registration Card. (Individuals who also have I-94 forms from the Department of Homeland Security may qualify for student financial aid under certain circumstances.).

Applying for Aid

To apply for aid at Ramapo, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit by March 1. No other application forms are required.

By complying with this priority deadline, students will be notified on or about April 1, as to their expected aid package.

The FAFSA is usually available from any high school in the fall, or on the Web (see below). Applicants should use Ramapo’s school code (009344) when filing.

Transfer Students

Transfer students must initiate a school code change on the web or on a Student Aid Report (SAR) to ensure that their account will be appropriately credited. Students should begin this process at the time of application. Contact Ramapo’s Financial Aid Office at (201) 684-7549 for additional questions.

For students who wish to pay their bill in installments, Ramapo offers a Monthly Payment Plan. Contact the Bursar’s Office at (201) 684-7495 for details.
