What is a Winamp Plug-in?

A plug-in is a program designed to add to or change the functionality of Winamp. Duh.

Uhhhh. Fine. But what can plug-ins do?

Plug-ins can do lots of things. People have made plug-ins that turn Winamp into an alarm clock. Some plug-ins can be used to tweak the sound of your music. Visual plug-ins let you see sounds and hear colors without ingesting harmful chemicals. You can even translate your Winamp menus into Portuguese with a language pack plug-in.

Wow. That is fantastic. But if Winamp CAN do all that. Then why doesn't the one I downloaded have all that stuff?

Well, for one thing we were too lazy to build that much functionality into Winamp. But we weren't too lazy to make Winamp open enough so that you (or someone vastly more intelligent than you) could build whatever kind of program you like and tack it right onto Winamp.

So you are saying that I have the power to alter the way Winamp works?

Sure thing He-man. Trot on over to our developers section and take a stab at making your own. If it comes out nice you could always post it on our website and millions of others will praise your name for giving them the best darn plug-in ever. Or you can just stand on the shoulders of giants and grab some that have already been made for you.
