A Start on Typing

To score big on the Sign Here game, it helps to know the "right" way to type. Most computers have a "QWERTY" keyboard, named for the first letters in the top row.

Start with your fingers in the "home" position. Do do that, put your left index finger on the F and your right index finger on the J. Your other fingers of your left hand rest on D, S, and A. The other fingers of your right hand rest on K, L and ; . In the home position, your fingers are touching the keys very lightly, and you are ready to type. From here, you will learn by feel where the other letters are. Use the color coding in this picture to learn which fingers to use for which keys. Use your right thumb for the space bar.

To learn to type fast just takes practice. Type short, simple words over and over without looking without looking at the keys until your fingers can almost type by themselves. You will build "muscle memory" in your fingers. The only way to get it is practice, practice, practice.

But, the sooner you learn to type well, the more time you will save yourself throughout your whole life!
