Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) released the following statement in regard to the Gaza resolution voted on today in the House of Representatives. "There is no question that as a sovereign nation, Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens. The people of Israel should not have to live in constant fear of rocket fire from Hamas. "Today, the House voted on the wrong resolution at the wrong time. I voted present on this resolution because I do not believe it is in the best interest of resolving the current situation. Congress should support the call of the international community for a ceasefire and efforts to establish a lasting peace and bring desperately needed humanitarian aid to this region. Innocent civilians are suffering on a massive scale, and we should focus our work on removing restrictions to bring food, water, and medical care to those in need. "As a Member of Congress, I support the ongoing efforts of the United States´ Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and particularly the efforts of the Egyptian government, and the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for "an immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza". As Americans, we have a strong interest in ensuring peace, stability, and security for Israel and the entire Middle East, and that is why I urge American diplomacy to be active and fully engaged in the region with our international partners to find a lasting solution". |
