Pleasantville, N.J., Program Serving Out-of-School Youth Receives Recognition of Excellence Honor
Second Annual Honors Presented at Workforce Innovations 2005 in Philadelphia

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. - The Allied Health Youth Advancement Program (AHYAP) received the top Recognition of Excellence (ROE) honor in the "Serving Out-of-School Youth" category at the Workforce Innovations 2005 Conference in Philadelphia. Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco presented the second annual ROE honors, which recognize job training programs from around the nation that have achieved outstanding success. Honorees were selected from more than 100 applicant organizations nationwide.

"This year's Recognition of Excellence honorees exemplify the workforce system's capacity to develop new approaches for equipping workers with the skills necessary to compete in the global economy," said DeRocco. "These projects and the people behind them offer examples of success that colleagues in education and job training can replicate to meet workforce needs throughout the country."

The Employment and Training Administration presents ROE honors in five categories. The "Serving Out-of-School Youth" category recognizes innovative techniques and collaboration with business, industry and essential partners in workforce and economic development to solve the education, training and hiring challenges of serving out-of-school young adults.

In 2002, the Atlantic/Cape May county area faced a shortage of workers in the patient care and technology services sectors of the health care industry. To meet this workforce challenge, the local Workforce Investment Board in collaboration with Atlantic Cape Community College and several medical centers created the AHYAP program, which provides health care employers with much-needed workers, while providing meaningful employment opportunities for out-of-school youth.

AHYAP has enrolled over 50 out-of-school youth, with nearly 30 having already gained employment with Atlantic/Cape May health care providers. Program participants have earned valuable health care credentials such as EKG and phlebotomy certifications.
