U.S. Secretary of Labor Chao Announces $125 Million Grant Competition for the President's Community-Based Job Training Grants
WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the competition for the first $125 million to be awarded through President Bush's Community-Based Job Training Grants.
"This Administration has long applauded and supported the vital role of community colleges in meeting job training needs," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "Approximately $125 million in grants will be made available to these institutions to prepare American workers for career success in high growth industries."
Community-Based Job Training Grants will support workforce training for high growth industries through the nation's community and technical colleges. Their primary purpose is to build community colleges' capacity to equip workers with the skills required to succeed in local industries. Training will prepare workers for jobs that are expected to experience high growth and industries where demand for qualified workers is outstripping supply.
"This competition will build on efforts the President began with the High Growth Job Training Initiative, an endeavor in which community colleges have been very active as grantees and partners in projects underway in 40 states," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco.
A competitive Solicitation for Grant Applications (SGA) appears in today's edition of the Federal Register and can be accessed online through www.doleta.gov/sga/sga.cfm. The competition for grants among community colleges will remain open for 60 days, with awards to follow. A second competition for grants is expected to be held later this year.
