U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $1.5 Million Grant to Aid 400 Dislocated Workers in Missouri

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $1,527,711, with an initial release of $497,176, to assist approximately 400 workers affected by layoffs at Ford Motor Company and Lear Seating Corporation, Hazelwood, Mo.

"Missouri workers hit by these layoffs need access to services that will help them prepare for new careers in high-growth industries," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This grant will ensure these workers get the training and supportive services they need to make the transition."

Workers affected by the layoffs were certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA) in December 2004. The grant, awarded to the Missouri Division of Workforce Development, will provide services separate from those available under TAA and ATAA.

The array of services available through the grant will include assessment, individual counseling and case management. Supportive services also will be available and may include child care, transportation assistance, job-related certifications, uniforms and equipment.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
