Independent Auditor Gives CSB Seventh Consecutive Clean Financial Opinion

For more information, go to: 2007 Performance and Accountability Report

Washington, DC, November 16, 2007 - The U.S. Chemical Safety Board's financial statements have received an unqualified "clean" opinion - the best possible audit outcome - for the seventh consecutive year, as the result of an independent audit for fiscal year 2007.

The CSB has received a clean audit opinion each and every year since the first independent audit was conducted in fiscal year 2001. CSB Chief Financial Officer, Bea Robinson said, "The audit report demonstrates the agency's commitment to fulfilling its financial responsibilities to the American taxpayers."

The audit results, management's discussion and analysis, performance report, and financial report were published yesterday in the agency's annual Performance and Accountability Report (PAR) for fiscal year 2007. Highlighted in the performance report are CSB successes in completing 10 investigations, closing 55 recommendations, producing four animated safety videos, and conducting outreach for lessons learned from chemical accidents the agency has investigated.

The Accountability of Tax Dollars Act of 2002 requires small agencies, such as the CSB, to submit audited financial statements to the Congress and the Office of Management and Budget.

The CSB is an independent federal agency charged with investigating industrial chemical accidents. The agency's board members are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. CSB investigations look into all aspects of chemical accidents, including physical causes such as equipment failure as well as inadequacies in safety regulations, codes, standards, management systems, training, and industry practices.

The Board does not issue citations or fines but does make safety recommendations to plants, industry organizations, labor groups, and regulatory agencies such as OSHA and EPA. For more information, please visit our website, www.csb.gov.
