June 10 Joint Roundtable to Focus on Reactive Hazards

(Washington, DC - June 6, 2003) The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be cosponsoring a roundtable discussion on June 10 to focus on regulatory alternatives for controllling reactive hazards. These hazards, which are associated with uncontrolled chemical reactions in industrial settings, have caused more than 150 serious accidents over the past 20 years according to a CSB special investigation completed in September 2002. That investigation showed that most reactive accidents involve chemicals or mixtures not covered by current EPA and OSHA process safety rules. The June 10 roundtable will bring together stakeholders from industry, labor, academia, government, and other organizations to discuss how EPA and OSHA might expand their regulatory coverage of reactive hazards, as recommended by the Chemical Safety Board. The meeting is open by invitation; for further information contact Daniel Horowitz at (202) 261-7613.
