When diversity is discussed
across campus, the topic often seems to focus on diversity with respect to
faculty, staff, and students of color. Yet, diversity can and should be more
representative than color—diversity with respect to disability, nationality,
race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, sex (gender), and age are
all central to a rich understanding of diversity.
Mission
The Diversity Committee addresses diversity issues in the College
related to the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students;
fosters an environment that welcomes different perspectives, backgrounds,
and life experiences; encourages all members of the College community to
develop mutual respect and appreciation for multiple viewpoints; and
promotes the principle of equal opportunity in both the educational and work
environments.
Function
The Diversity Committee will provide guidance and make recommendations
to the dean on policies and procedures affecting diversity in the College.
In addition, the Committee will coordinate with its university counterpart
and advise the dean regarding recommendations from the university committee.
Membership
Because this committee concerns on diversity throughout the College, its
membership is comprised of individuals from all college constituencies.
Membership may be as follows:
-
Three faculty
representatives: one each from accounting/finance, LOMIS, and
management/marketing
-
Two professional and
scientific staff, including the Multicultural Liaison Officer
-

This committee serves in an
advisory capacity to the dean and, therefore, does not fall under the
College’s charter for faculty governance. Membership would be for two years,
with no more than half the committee rotating off in any given year. The
committee will select its chair, who will also represent the College on
university committees related to diversity.
