Service Learning on the Farm

Adopt-A-Crop  •  Courses  •  Intern Job Descriptions

Students of all ages are always notably proud of their work, especially when they are harvesting fresh produce that will be donated to local food banks.

FOOD FOR ALL
Over 1000 participants, including students, and several corporate service groups, visited the farm last season to participate in service-learning programs. Service learning has two components: an activity that is of service to the community, and a hands-on educational experience. While helping to plant and harvest, participants are introduced to the concepts and techniques of sustainable agriculture, and the idea of an urban farm. The program engages volunteers in activities on the farm, while empowering them with a sense that they are giving back to their community.

Our service-learning sessions are age appropriate and designed to fit each specific group. The program is in the early spring, and utilizes 4 staff - the educational coordinator, the farmer and two interns.

We encourage multiple farm visits whenever possible. Rio Grande Community Farm Adopt-A-Crop program provides participants with an opportunity to visit on two or more occasions to experience continuity in their work. We also offer one time service-learning sessions.

Thirty-five seventh graders from Albuquerque Academy dedicated their service learning visits to a specific section of the irrigation ditch. They cleared weeds and brush from the ditch and then applied concrete to patch the holes.

Groups learn about the history of the farm, the acequia system, and the origins of some of our daily foods.
