Winter 2009 Environmental Studies Awards

The deadline for winter awards is Friday, March 6th at 4pm.

The Environmental Studies Department is proud to offer the following awards to registered students this quarter (click on award names to download the application):

The Richard Cooley Award in Environmental Studies: An award of up to $1000 will be given to a continuing UCSC student for a field project that results in a tangible, positive action for the betterment of the natural environment or improvement in environmental quality.  This award is given in honor of Richard Cooley, founder of the Environmental Studies program at UCSC.

James Stuart Chanley Scholarship in Environmental Studies: In memory of James Chanley, an award of up to $1,000 will be given to a UCSC Environmental Studies major.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student with financial need whose record demonstrates initiative and commitment to the environment and most closely resembles that of James Chanley (biography on back of application).

The David Gaines Award in Environmental Studies: Up to $1000 will be given to a registered UCSC undergraduate or graduate student(s) in honor of David Gaines, founder of the Mono Lake Committee.  The award is intended to cover expenses incurred for field projects that will make a significant contribution to the field of environmental studies by adding to our knowledge of a specific problem or by strengthening protection of the environment.  Award(s) will be based on demonstrated initiative, feasibility of project, problem description and application of research to solution of the problem. Preference is given to Environmental Studies majors.
