Running in an arc between Hokkaido, Japan, to the south and the Kamchatka Peninsula to the north, are the Kuril Islands. In this image, smoke from fires in eastern Russia is drifting out over Sakhalin Island (left) and out over the Pacific. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on May 17, 2002.
