McClanahan is an uncommon literary link between the 1960s California counterculture experience and a rural American lifestyle. Are you interested in becoming a high school teacher?
Have you ever considered a career in teaching?
If you have a passion for your major and are considering the career opportunities in your field, you might want to share your passion for learning with middle level and high school students. There is a nationwide shortage of teachers in many areas, especially Math and Science, and other areas are also in need of high quality teachers. You have an opportunity to work with students who are just beginning to consider what they will do in the future. You can share your knowledge and skill with them every day, help them to understand why your field is so important for their future, and encourage their interest in your field in the future. And, as a caring professional, you have an opportunity to make a difference in each student’s life as you become partners in learning. You also have the opportunity to work with other professional teachers in all fields and develop lifelong relationships with people who care as much about students as you do. If you would like to discuss a career in teaching middle or high school with an advisor, please contact Dr. Harold Heap, advisor for Secondary Education. He will be happy to share information and insights with you.
Contact Dr. Harold Heap by phone at (435) 797-2224 or by email at harold.heap@usu.edu.

Free Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program that provides review sessions for students enrolled in difficult General Education courses. Each year, over 7,000 students participate in SI. Our research has shown that USU students who regularly attend SI sessions earn better grades and withdraw from classes less often than students who choose not to participate. SI sessions are run by student SI leaders who have demonstrated proficiency in the course content and who have received training in a variety of active learning strategies and techniques. SI sessions are scheduled 2-3 times per week for one hour each session, during which students are encouraged to think about, question, and confirm their understanding of the class material (lecture, labs, and text readings). SI leaders also model and teach effective study strategies that a student can apply to any class. This is accomplished through active learning methods, small group work, and practice quizzes.  Go to http://www.usu.edu/arc/supplemental_instruction/ for more information and to get a schedule.

Financial Aid Counselors in the Financial Aid Office
The Financial Aid office is staffed with financial aid counselors. They are an excellent resource. To find the name and e-mail of your financial aid counselor go to http://www.usu.edu/finaid/about/. You can also visit the Financial Aid office in the Taggart Student Center room 106.

It’s not too early to consider how you are going to pay for next semester’s tuition. The tuition and fee payment deadline for spring semester is December 19th (December 12th postmark). Remember that the University does not accept Visa for tuition payment, while you can still use MasterCard and Discover with a 2% convenience fee. (The best way to pay tuition is to use the e-check option using ACCESS. There is no convenience fee and no lines for e-check!)

What to do in Logan

Midnight movies
As college students, we are expected to be poor and thrifty. Many movie theaters around town offer great deals on movies that have been out for a couple of weeks. On Fridays and Saturdays, Cinefour (753-6444) offers $3 midnight showings. Other movie theaters around town have similar deals for midnight movies. Check it out.

Logan Eatery

Bluebird Restaurant
This is a local favorite. Located in a historic building at 19 North Main Street, the Bluebird serves lunch and dinner and features an old fashioned soda fountain. You can also purchase some delectable chocolates after your meal. Hours are Mon-Thu 11:00-9:30 p.m. and Fri-Sat 11:00-10:00 p.m.

Club Spotlight

Slackline Club
Slackline is the coolest sport and everyone who tries it loves it! It is like tight-rope walking between two objects, usually two trees. The climbing webbing that you walk on is fairly loose and bouncy, making it harder to keep your balance. It's great for balance, flexibility, exercise, and loads of fun! You can learn lots of cool tricks and impress all your friends! Watch out, you'll get addicted! Meeting times are Fridays at 4:00 p.m. on the east side of the Quad. Go to http://www.usu.edu/asusu to join.

Tips from the A-Team
Don’t procrastinate when it comes to contacting your advisor or registering for classes. Priority registration week begins on November 10th. Current freshmen will be eligible to register on Friday, November 14th and you will want to have your schedule planned WAY before that time. Here are a few things to remember when it comes to priority registration:
·         Before and during priority registration week, advising offices around campus become swamped with frantic procrastinators in need of assistance before their registration date. Schedule your appointment now and avoid the frustration and anxiety that can accompany long lines.
·         Don’t believe the myth that “all the classes are full by Friday morning.” While it’s true that upper-classmen register before you, remember that they are generally registering for upper-level classes. Registration opens at midnight on your day of eligibility, and you will be surprised at the number of classes still open at that time. They key is to know what classes you need and to get on the internet at midnight, or shortly thereafter.
·         Lastly, remember that you do want the assistance of your advisor. You can take advice from siblings, roommates, and other people on your class schedule; but make sure you double check everything with your academic advisor. He or she will be the one that ultimately signs off on your graduation papers so you will want to be collaborating each semester.
USU Sustainability Wiki

Join the new USU sustainability wiki!
In January 2007 Utah State University president Stan Albrecht signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to make USU one of the first schools in the nation to commit to reducing carbon emissions and eventually achive climate neutrality. To aid in the effort to make Utah State a sustainable campus, a sustainability wiki has been created to help students, faculty, and staff share ideas and support each other’s efforts to become more sustainable. Like a cross between wikipedia and facebook, the sustainability wiki allows you to post your goals and ideas, make friends with other eco-minded Aggies, and contribute to the discussion about sustainability and global climate issues. Create your profile now at:  http://sustainabilitywiki.usu.edu/.
