Los
Poblanos Fields is 138 acres of historic farmland located in Albuquerque's
North Valley. The farmland was purchased with the support of the taxpayers
of the City of Albuquerque and the volunteer hours of many hard working
citizens. It was an important achievement to secure the property as
a working urban farm.
Rio Grande Community Farm (RGCF), a [501c.3 not-for-profit corporation],
has partnered with the City of Albuquerque, Parks and Recreation Department
Open Space Division since 1997 to offer community based agricultural
programs at Los Poblanos Fields. We currently lease approximately
fifty acres and coordinate several initiatives including:
- The Annual Corn Maze and Autumn Festival Harvest Markets
- Service-Learning
Programs for K-12.
- A Community Garden and the Alvarado Elementary
School Garden
- Special Events to celebrate The Agricultural Tradition
and Heritage of The North Valley
- Adopt-A-Crop Volunteer Program, Food Security Crops
[with the support of a USDA matching grant]
-
Classes and Training in Sustainable Agriculture
We
grow food and crops for both people and wildlife. Many of our food
crops are distributed to local organizations that provide supplemental
food services. We also market our crops at local Farmers Markets and
on-site during the Annual Corn Maze Weekend Festival Markets. Encouraging
the practice of organic and sustainable agricultural methods in our
cities promotes conservation, and supports many important cultural
and environmental objectives including: protecting wildlife habitat,
increasing biological diversity, maintaining cultural identity and
tradition, development of new economic opportunities for farmers and
gardeners, creating a local sustainable food syste farmers and
gardeners, creating a local sustainable food system, and supporting
community vitality.
- SUSTAINABLE URBAN AGRICULTURE
- ENHANCE URBAN WILDLIFE HABITAT
- RESEARCH AND INTERPRET THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, FOOD AND
- PUBLIC LAND
- CREATE EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITES IN AGRICULTURE
- CELEBRATE THE TRADITIONS AND CULTURE OF AGRICULTURE
