College of Ag Helps with Farm City Celebration

Butte County is getting ready for the 27th annual Farm City Celebration Nov. 2-15. The aim of the celebration is to support, benefit and promote the agricultural industry through education, information and community support. Throughout the two-week festivity events will include a harvest festival, kid’s day, poker walk, farm city bus tour and a harvest dinner dance to finish off the celebration.

California State University, Chico’s College of Agriculture helps with the event every year. The University Farm will host the annual Kids Day at the Farm on Nov. 6. Hundreds of local third graders visit the farm to learn about agricultural and safety education. On Nov. 8 the farm will host the 9th Annual Dog Days of Fall, 5k & 1-mile "Poker" Walk. The event is open to the public and begins with registration at 8:30 a.m.

The Farm City Celebration is a great way for CSU, Chico students to get involved in agriculture literacy in the community, sharing what they learn on the farm and from their classes. Student organizations will be helping with several events. The University Farm meats lab will grill and sell sausage at the harvest festival at Bidwell Mansion on Sunday, Nov. 2. Alpha Tau Alpha, the agricultural education fraternity, will teach kids where their pizza comes from with an interactive pizza skit during Kids Day. Additionally, the stock dog association will demonstrate the skill of working stock dogs during Kids Day and the Poker Walk.

Farm City Celebration is a shared effort of a number of local organizations, including the Chico Chamber of Commerce, California Women for Agriculture, Butte County Cattlemen, Butte County CattleWomen, Butte County Ag Commissioner's Office, Butte County Farm Bureau, UC Cooperative Extension, the CSU, Chico, College of Agriculture, and CSU, Chico and Butte Community College agriculture student organizations.
