Tucked into a bend of the Lena River in Russia, massive burn scars remain after months of fires plagued the region near the city of Yakutsk. These images from September 2002, show the burn scars in both true- and false-color. In the false color images, vegetation is bright green, and burn scars are reddish brown. Though all appeared quiet on Sept. 9, active fires were once again detected on the 15th. Smoke plumes were once again visible across the fading landscape of approaching autumn. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
