U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $927,957 Grant to Aid 335 Massachusetts Workers Affected by Closings

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a $927,957 grant to assist approximately 335 Massachusetts workers dislocated as a result of multiple closings in the commonwealth. All of the workers affected by the closure were previously certified as eligible to receive Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).

"Workers affected by these closings are striving to begin new careers," said Secretary Chao. "This nearly $928,000 grant will ensure that these Massachusetts workers have access to employment services that can help them transition into new jobs in growing industries."

Massachusetts workers covered by this grant include those affected by the closures of Dresser Rand, located in Millbury; Interface Fabrics in Douglas; and Thermo IEC in Milford, and workers impacted by layoffs at Maxtor in Shrewsbury, and William Wright in West Warren, Mass.

The grant, awarded to the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with services that are not covered under the TAA program. Services provided through the grant will include assessment, counseling and case management.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary of Labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants and other Labor Department employment and training programs, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
