Assistant Secretary of Labor DeRocco and Gov. Ehrlich Mark Employment Milestones in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco participated in a press conference today at Government House with Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. The two officials discussed the state's employment gains and upcoming economic opportunities in industries such as aerospace and health care, as well as those arising from Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions.

"The employment figures continue to show Maryland ahead of much of the nation with good jobs and first-rate futures for its residents," said DeRocco. "Maryland has been among a handful of state models making robust efforts to transform their workforce investment systems to meet the demands of the 21st century economy."

Maryland was among the first grantees under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative, with $4.5 million in health care industry training grants awarded to the Governor's Workforce Investment Board and Johns Hopkins Health System.

In addition to health care, the state has identified the aerospace industry cluster as a sector in critical need of skilled workers. Maryland aerospace leaders have engaged the Employment and Training Administration to develop solutions to fill this workforce demand.

The President's High Growth Job Training Initiative represents the first major step in a series of actions that the Employment and Training Administration has taken to facilitate partnership among business, education and the workforce investment system to develop solutions to the workforce challenges facing high growth industries. The initiative targets education and skills development resources toward helping workers gain the skills they need to build successful careers in growing industries.
