U.S. Department Of Labor Announces $500,000 Grant to Assist Hurricane Katrina Evacuees in Tennessee

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a grant of $500,000 to the state of Tennessee to provide employment assistance and training to evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. The funds, awarded to the Tennessee Department of Labor, will assist approximately 700 evacuees statewide.

"Tennesseans have been very generous in helping Hurricane Katrina survivors get on with their lives," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This $500,000 grant to Tennessee will provide Katrina survivors with job training, placement assistance and other supportive services such as child care and transportation so that they can rebuild careers and their lives."

Services provided through this grant include employment assistance, job training and continued state and local efforts to disseminate information on how to access Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). Supportive services, including child care and transportation, will also be available through this grant.

"Evacuees beginning new lives and looking for new employment can make good use of the assistance that Tennessee offers," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "This grant will enable Tennessee to continue to provide services to evacuees getting back on their feet following Hurricane Katrina's devastation."

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. To access the Katrina Recovery Job Connection, please visit http://www.jobsearch.org/katrinajobs or America's Job Bank at www.ajb.org.
