This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from July 26, 2002, shows Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in brilliant summer green. The peninsula is located off the far northeastern tip to Siberia, and several mountain peaks are retaining snow even late into the summer. Kamchatka is home to numerous active volcanoes, and some of the thermal signatures detected by MODIS may be from volcanic activity, though most are likely to be fires.
