The purpose of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is to provide equal economic opportunities for full participation of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) businesses in our economy where the may be underserved. To accomplish this purpose, Executive Order 13339 (May 13, 2004), as amended by Executive Order 13403 (May 12, 2006), creates the following complimentary functions within the Department of Commerce: (i) a Federal Interagency Working Group; (ii) the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Commission); and the (iii) Office of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Office of WHIAAPI).

Section 3 of Executive Order 13403 (May 12, 2006) extends the term of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to May 13, 2007, unless extended beyond that by the President.
