Girls in control, non-CATCH schools had significant increases in overweight from 3rd to 4th and 3rd to 5th grades (4th and 5th grades were not different). Source: Coleman et al., 2005)

9 Population Reach

(image: bar graph illustrating percentages of 151 representative Texas elementary schools that adopt, train, and implement CATCH, GBS, and HW)

10 Population Reach

>2,000 Texas elementary schools
Thousands nation and worldwide

Other Adopters:

12 Conclusions

  • CATCH is a well documented, evidence based, cost effective, and net beneficial program.
  • SB 19 appears to have stimulated wide scale adoption, training, and implementation of CATCH.
  • Overweight prevention efforts among 4th grade students appears to be blunting the increase in overweight.
  • Dissemination of coordinated school health programs is time consuming and labor intensive. Our public health and education infrastructure is insufficiently equipped to handle training and implementation demands.
