U.S. Department of Labor announces $1 million grant to assist
 trade-affected Louisiana auto workers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1 million grant to assist approximately 334 Louisiana workers affected by layoffs at five auto industry companies.

“This $1 million grant to Louisiana will fund skills training, job search assistance and other employment services to help workers find new jobs,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

This grant, awarded to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, will provide trade-affected Louisiana workers with access to the full array of dislocated worker services including services that are not available through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program.  Such services include skills assessment, counseling, case management, job search assistance job placement and follow-up.

The affected companies, all in Shreveport, include: AI-Shreveport LLC, General Motors, Innertech-Shreveport, Johnson Controls and Tango Transport. Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications were issued by the companies between July 28 and Aug. 1, 2008.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
