U.S. Department of Labor announces nearly $10.4 million grant to assist  Indiana workers affected by recreational vehicle industry layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $10,395,000 grant to assist approximately 900 Indiana workers affected by mass layoffs and permanent closures in the recreational vehicle industry.

“Gov. Daniels and I have been in close contact on this nearly $10.4 million grant, which through his leadership will provide Indiana workers affected by the downturn in RV sales with re-employment services such as career counseling and skills training to help them find new jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

Today’s grant, awarded to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with the full array of dislocated worker services that may include skills assessment, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

The area targeted for this grant includes Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Noble and St. Joseph counties.

The recreational vehicle industry has experienced a significant decline in sales over the past year.  Layoffs that started in July are expected to continue into October at multiple facilities.

Of the $10,395,000 awarded, $3,531,000 will be released immediately.  Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
