WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $550,000 grant to assist approximately 180 workers affected by the closure of Tembec Pulp and Paper Group, located in St. Francisville, Louisiana.
“This closure has left many workers in need of assistance to prepare for new careers in growing industries that offer solid employment opportunities,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. “Tembec Pulp and Paper provided employment to many of the workers in this community. This funding will provide employment-related services to help affected workers get quickly back on their feet as they return to work.”
Rapid Response activities were conducted on June 11, 2007, to help inform affected workers of the services available to them through the workforce investment system. Assistance available through this grant may include assessment, training, education, and re-employment services.
This project will cover affected workers in the parishes of West Feliciana, East Feliciana, and East Baton Rouge.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
