Description

This is a modification to the synopsis entitled ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE EXPLORER PROGRAM: SMALL EXPLORERS AND MISSIONS OF OPPORTUNITY which was posted on September 10, 2007.

Subject: SMEX AO Amendment 2: Investigations on the International Space Station

With this amendment, the NASA Announcement of Opportunity NNH07ZDA003O, “Explorer Program: Small Explorers (SMEX) and Missions of Opportunity,” now allows Mission of Opportunity proposals for NASA-sponsored investigations on the International Space Station that can be delivered by the HTV cargo vehicle.

NASA has determined that there may be payload opportunities for small space science payloads to be attached to the International Space Station. NASA has available annual launch opportunities after 2010 on the Japanese HTV launch vehicle. Available external attach points include both zenith and nadir pointing locations.

Notices of Intent (NOI) to propose are very useful to NASA for planning purposes. Proposers intending to submit proposals for ISS-based Mission of Opportunity investigations should submit a NOI no later than December 11, 2007.

The due date for Mission of Opportunity proposals for NASA-sponsored investigations on the International Space Station is February 12, 2008, which is later than the due date for other SMEX proposals.

Further information on the opportunities and constraints for ISS attached payloads may be found in the “International Space Station Opportunities” document in the Explorer Program Library at http://explorers.larc.nasa.gov/smexlib.html .

And at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/science/nlab/platform.html .

On or about November 27, 2007, Amendment No. 2 to the NASA Announcement of Opportunity " Explorer Program: Small Explorers (SMEX) and Missions of Opportunity" (NNH07ZDA003O) will be posted on the NASA research opportunity homepage at http://nspires.nasaprs.com/ (select “Solicitations” then “Open Solicitations” then “NNH07ZDA003O”).

Technical or scientific questions concerning International Space Station payload constraints, launch opportunities, and other technical matters, may be addressed to Mr. William R. Jones, ISS Payloads Office, NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX 77058; email william.r.jones@nasa.gov.
