Working at OFHEO Video Transcript

[Jim Lockhart] Hi I’m Jim Lockhart, the Director of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight or OFHEO. OFHEO’s mission is to promote housing and a strong national housing finance system. We do this by ensuring the safety and soundness of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two companies that own or guarantee 40 percent of the home mortgages in this country. Our oversight of these two entities is critical to the success of the nation’s housing finance system. You may have read that OFHEO uncovered serious accounting and management problems at these companies and is now overseeing how those problems are fixed. We carry out this important mission through our talented and energetic workforce.

[Andy Leventis - Economist] Well I feel like I’m making a difference, I feel as though the output that OFHEO is producing in the form of the House Price Index is very much in demand.

[Lola Johnson - Senior Examiner, Operational Risk] The importance of the work that I do here at OFHEO is I assist in ensuring the safety and soundness of the Government Sponsored Enterprises which include Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

[Lezell Murphy - Manager, Internal & External Audits] The work that we do at OFHEO is very important. The financial controls and audit risk group operates inside the Office of the Chief Accountant and we make sure the work that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do is done in a safe and sound manner.

[Maria Fernandez - Principal Exam Specialist, Credit Risk] I’ve had lots of opportunities to expand my career at OFHEO. When I first started I was Sr. Financial Analyst in the Office of Capital Supervision. Since then I’ve had two promotions, I’m now a Principal Examiner in the Office of Examinations.

[Bob Stanton - Benefits Officer] OFHEO’s enabling legislation allows us to offer benefits that are agency sponsored. For example, we have free dental coverage and free comprehensive vision coverage and we pay 100% of the cost of commuting when employees use approve public transportation.

[Lola Johnson - Senior Examiner, Operational Risk] Some of the benefits of working at OFHEO for me is the work/life balance. I am able to balance my professional career with my personal life.

[Andy Leventis - Economist] OFHEO offers a compressed work schedule so that some individuals can take off every other Friday.

[Lezell Murphy - Manager, Internal & External Audits] What I like most about working at OFHEO is working with the people who are here at OFHEO. I found them to be very nice, they have been professional people. Many of them are very educated and they have advanced very well in their careers.

[Andy Leventis - Economist] I’ve just been ecstatic since I’ve been here. I’ve really felt like I’ve been able to develop an expertise…and I’ve been able to use my statistical and economic tools to make a difference.

[Lola Johnson - Senior Examiner, Operational Risk ] What I like about my work is that it’s very dynamic. The work is never the same, its very challenging. I get the opportunity to work with a group of highly talented professionals in an ever-changing and fast moving environment.

[Bob Stanton - Benefits Officer] One of the reasons I really enjoy working at OFHEO is I feel appreciated by the employees. As a member of the human resources staff, we spend a most of our time providing services to the different mission-related offices. Those offices require our utmost attention to the benefits that we provide to both them and their families.

OFHEO draws professionals from Wall Street, banking, law, accounting, economics and finance.
