Presidential Letters
National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directives
- National Security Presidential Directive NSPD 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive HSPD-20, May 9, 2007, Subject: National Continuity Policy.
This directive establishes a comprehensive national policy on the continuity of Federal Government structures and operations and a single National Continuity Coordinator responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of Federal continuity policies. The Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism is designated as the National Continuity Coordinator in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs to coordinate the development and implementation of continuity policy for executive departments and agencies.
- Homeland Security Presidential Directive Hspd-12, August 27, 2004, Subject: Policy for a Common Identification Standard for Federal Employees and Contractors.
This directive establishes policies to enhance security, increase Government efficiency, reduce
identity fraud, and protect personal privacy by establishing a mandatory, Government-wide standard
for secure and reliable forms of identification issued by the Federal Government to its employees
and contractors (including contractor employees).
- Homeland Security Presidential Directive Hspd-11, August 27, 2004, Subject: Comprehensive
Terrorist-Related Screening Procedures. This directive establishes policies to implement
a coordinated and comprehensive approach to terrorist-related screening
that supports homeland security, at home and abroad.
- President Issues New Orders to Reform Intelligence, August 27, 2004.
This Fact Sheet briefly summarizes four new Executive Orders that were signed on August 27, 2004 that
are posted in the Executive Orders section of this Web page. The four Executive Orders relate to Hspd-11
and Hspd-12 and planned legislation to implement recommendations of the National Commission. on
Terrorist Attacks on the United States.
- Homeland Security Presidential Directive Hspd-8, December 17, 2003, Subject: National Preparedness:
This directive establishes policies to strengthen the preparedness of the United States to respond to
threatened or actual domestic terrorist attacks, major disasters, and other emergencies.
- Homeland Security Presidential Directive Hspd-7, December 17, 2003, Subject: Critical Infrastructure Identification, Prioritization, and Protection:
This directive supersedes Presidential Decision Directive 63, May 22, 1998, Subject: Critical Infrastructure Protection.
