WELCOME TO THE OASIS!

The Oasis Sanctuary is a life-care facility for captive Exotic birds. In particular we are a refuge for parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other Psittacine birds (predominantly CITES I and II endangered birds), although we do accept Passerines (finches and canaries), Columbiformes (doves and "fancy" or racing pigeons), and other captive avian species. We offer birds a stable and loving home for the duration of their natural lives.

As a true sanctuary, we do not offer birds for adoption, however we work with and refer birds requiring re-homing to bona fide adoption programs around the country.

Many of The Oasis birds come from other rehabilitation and/or adoption programs where qualified personnel have determined that it is not in the bird's best interests to be placed in private homes. Some of our birds have "special needs", are physically handicapped or challenged requiring unique living or feeding situations. Others have been bounced from home to home, often being physically and/or emotionally abused and have simply become too fearful of people to be companions to people any longer.

The Oasis Sanctuary is proud to be the first exotic bird sanctuary to have dual accreditation from the American Sanctuary Association (ASA) and The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS).

The Oasis Sanctuary was incorporated in the State of Arizona on May 22, 1997. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Federal EIN number is 86-0885646. We are also registered with the Secretary of State in Arizona as a recognized charity.

As most of you are aware of by now, beginning April 6, 2008, The Oasis worked diligently to
bring an abandoned American Macaw named Gulliver back to the US. He was stranded in the Republic of Kiribati (Kee-ree-bas) in the area of the South Pacific referred to as Micronesia,
when his former care-givers' boat crashed
and sank off Fanning Island.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together to
Celebrate National Bird Day - January 5
"I Want to Be One in a Million" Challenge

As Education Coordinator for The Oasis Sanctuary in Benson, Arizona, I thought, "What better time than National Bird Day to share with you some sobering facts:"  Parrots have life spans ranging from 10-90 (yes 90) years. When purchasing a bird, uninformed customers are rarely told of problems that often develop (noise, biting, aggression, feather picking and self-mutilation, to name a few). Many of these birds spend their lives isolated, confined to cages, bounced from home to home and subsequently find their way to a rescue. It's been established that parrots have the intelligence of a 3 to 5 year old child. Imagine having a 5 year old child spend day and night confined to a cage.

The Oasis is home to over 600 parrots. Over 600 parrots!  Look out in your backyard and count how many birds you see.  Then imagine counting to 600.  Some of The Oasis' birds are in free flight aviaries, however, these aviaries are not cheap. The Oasis' long term goal is to have all able-bodied parrots in free flight aviaries.  Here's where the "I want to be one in a million" challenge comes in. If you can, please send $1 to The Oasis, P.O. Box 30502, Phoenix, AZ 85046-0502. Wrap your dollar bill with a note that says "I ____[your name here]__ am one in a million." If we can get one million people to send The Oasis $1 each, The Oasis will get $1,000,000 and the aviaries can be built.  Imagine being a part of that!

The only way this is really going to work is if you pass this request on to your family and friends.  Such a small gesture on your part can make a big difference in the lives of The Oasis birds.  Remember, it's not enough to do WHAT you can, you have to do ALL you can.

Please check out our new website to learn more about this organization and the 600 birds who call The Oasis home.

Thank you for taking part in the I Want To Be One In A Million challenge.
