  • Founded September, 2003
  • Evolved from OSG and Nike Conversation
  • Founded as a Public/Private Initiative:
    • Public Sector: OSG, AAP, ADA, UC Davis
    • Private Sector: Nike, J&J, Campbell's
  • Merged with American Diabetes Association's New Initiative – August, 2005

20 Town Meeting Concept

  • Moderators present discussion questions
  • Each table has 10-15 minute discussion of the question
  • Input from each table's discussion is collected via laptop at each table and fed to central servers
  • A "Theme Team" monitors each table's input simultaneously and constructs a list of priorities based original question

21 Town Meeting Concept

  • Audience votes on priorities via key pads
  • Results immediately projected on a "jumbotron"
  • Proceed through script of questions on issue
  • Preliminary Report of priorities generated issued at end of the session
  • Complete database archived and available for detailed analysis based on demographics

22 Town Meeting Concept

  • Uses Town Meeting to solicit "grassroots" input on barriers and solutions to improve childhood nutrition and physical activity
  • Generates unique basis for guiding SAY as well as national policy directed at childhood obesity
  • Allows the "Wisdom of Crowds" to balance the "Opinions of Experts"
