6 Step Up For Wellness

  • Initiated in April 2004
  • Open to all regular staff and BOD members
  • Now in it's third year
  • Recognized by the CDC-Worksite Wellness Initiative SWAT analysis
  • Uses Peer Health Coaches
7 Screenings offered to staff:

  • Lipid Profile
  • BMI
  • Blood Pressure
  • Waist Circumference
8 Two Program Components

Incentive Points

  • Variety of activities: meditation; food demonstrations; pedometers; salsa classes
  • Submitted monthly to Health Coach
  • Incentive points vary from 5-25 with the larger number awarded for smoking cessation,etc…
  • BOD members are able to earn points for BOD participation

Health Outcomes

  • BMI->25
  • BP>135/85
  • Cholesterol >200 mg/dl
  • Smoking Status-None Smoker

10 Results for First Year: 2004-2005

  • Staff Satisfaction Results improved for 5 health related behaviors
  • 22 % of all smokers in SUW have quit smoking
  • 26% lowered their cholesterol
  • 39% of health goals were met in 2005
  • 22% of the staff experienced weight loss (600 lbs lost)!

  • Systolic Blood Pressure Decrease = 44%
  • No Systolic Blood Pressure Decrease = 56%

12 Quit vs. Still Smoking

  • Quit = 38%
  • Still Smoking = 62%

  • All new employees are given pedometers and booklets
  • Step Up For Wellness is presented during all new employee orientations
  • Results are posted in the staff newsletter
