Monday, September 24, 2007
8:00am - 5:00pm

Washington Hilton
1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20009

On Monday, September 24, 2007, the White House and the Departments of Education, Justice, Commerce, Agriculture, Labor, Veterans Affairs, Health & Human Services, Housing & Urban Development, and Homeland Security, the Agency for International Development, and the Small Business Administration will host a conference in Washington, DC, to help social service organizations learn more about President Bush's Faith-Based and Community Initiative. This conference will give practical information on education reform and provide technical assistance for accessing Federal resources that will expand the understanding and build the capacity of faith-based and community organizations to better serve children, youth, families, and communities. Although the conference will highlight successful educational partnerships in the Hispanic community, the information given at the conference will be of benefit to organizations that work with youth of all races and ethnic backgrounds.

The conference is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Visit www.fbci.gov to register online. Please register by Wednesday, September 18th. If you must cancel your registration, please send an email to fbci@dtihq.com so we may accommodate as many people as possible.

The conference is part of a series of events that are being held around the country. The conferences provide participants with a general overview of the Faith-Based and Community Initiative, information about the government grants process and available funding opportunities, and an overview of the legal responsibilities that come with the receipt of Federal funds. The events also offer grant writing tutorials for select Federal grant programs.

For more information, please call 202-456-6708, send an email to fbci@dtihq.com, or visit www.fbci.gov.

OJJDP Launches Enhanced SMART System

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has launched an enhanced version of its Socioeconomic Mapping and Resource Topography (SMART) System.

SMART is a geographic information system and Web-based mapping application that pinpoints local geographic areas of crime and delinquency and nearby governmental and community resources to prevent and control it.

This tool was developed to assist Federal, state, and local decision makers in targeting areas of greatest need and allocate resources accordingly. Along with maps, SMART creates tables and graphs to chart a wide array of socioeconomic data, such as population, crime, housing, health, and mortality. Data sources include the U.S. Census Bureau and OJJDP's Statistical Briefing Book.

Recent enhancements include the addition of:

The SMART System may be accessed at http://smart.gismapping.info.
