Shock. Fear. Confusion. These are common reactions when parents are told that their child has Type I diabetes. They learn that there is no cure, so it's a life sentence. At the same time, they are overwhelmed with medical information about the disease as well as blood testing, insulin shots and new dietary routines. And what about the initial emotional impact of this diagnosis on those parents? Too often, little is done to help parents cope.

"Moving Forward... With Diabetes" addresses the emotional journey faced by parents of children newly diagnosed with diabetes. This 72 minute program features interviews with parents of children with Type I diabetes. They share their insights, stories and reassuring messages — all in a supportive, positive manner. Topics include: facing the diagnosis, managing diet and testing, finding support, dealing with schools and normal activities, teaching responsibility to the child, and coping with emotions. There is plenty of helpful advice and lessons learned. Their children also offer advice to parents and talk about living with diabetes.

The chapter titles are:

  • After the diagnosis - coping with the diagnosis
  • A new lifestyle - new routines for the family
  • It's manageable - positive approaches
  • At school - issues and strategies
  • Out "there" - building a normal life
  • The journey - stories and lessons learned
  • Many resources - finding help
  • Good advice - advice and thoughts for parents
  • The kids - tips for parents and a kid's perspective

Reviews

"When my son Brennan was diagnosed with diabetes, there was nothing more comforting than hearing from other parents and children about their experience. Their stories reassured me that Brennan and I, like them, could make the shift from overwhelm to competence. These two videos offer that same reassurance to newly diagnosed families, and I highly recommend them."

Gloria Loring, actress-singer and mother of a son with Type I diabetes

"Recommended for all audiences from high school level to adult."

"Teachers who are preparing their students to welcome special needs students into their classrooms will find this a wonderful tool."

"Moving Forward...with Diabetes helps families realize they are not alone. Support and comfort are gained from watching and listening to others describe how diabetes has impacted their lives."

Children With Diabetes

"I like the variety of perspectives and the honesty. It offers a good mixture of reality and hope. Parents really need both in order to move forward and feel understood, and I haven’t seen anything else like it available. I think the video is terrific. It is interesting, informative and very reassuring. I like the different points of view, the variety in the ages of the children, and the comprehensive look at the issues that parents face every day. The overall message is one of compassion for both the adults and children involved with a strong dose of hope and optimism. I especially liked the last section with the children’s perspective and will be sure to share that part with my 12-year-old son."

Laura Plunkett

Author of The Challenge of Childhood Diabetes

"It was well done and certainly will be useful for newly diagnosed families."

Kids who are diagnosed with diabetes are naturally curious about other kids with this medical condition. They'd like the reassurance that they aren't alone and that they can manage it.

"I Have Diabetes Too!" is an informative and positive look at kids with diabetes. It features them enjoying all types of fun activities, talking about life with diabetes and performing standard blood testing procedures. This is not a clinical or technical educational video.

This is a great video for families, schools, camps, healthcare organizations, support groups, medical professionals, pediatric clinics and hospitals, and diversity education and inclusion programs.

"Kids With Differences" includes three upbeat and thought-provoking programs. They support children and young teens who have visible and non-visible health differences. And when used in classrooms or presented to groups, these programs educate general audiences to promote inclusion and understanding.

See kids enjoying a variety of sports, recreational interests, hobbies, educational activities and just having fun with friends. They talk openly about their lives, health and physical conditions, and what they'd like other kids to know about them. Most importantly, they teach us all that they are more like everyone else than different.

"Kids Just Want to Have Fun!" - Features kids with cerebral palsy, neromuscular conditons, spina bifida, amputations, cleft lip and palate, and burn scars. For grades K - 5 (7 min.)
