Activities Underway

Office of Safeguards and Security Evaluations (OA-10)

Protective Force Management and Capabilities Special Review: Preparations continued in support of onsite data collection activities scheduled to be conducted at Pantex. The purpose of this special review is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Department's overall protective force performance. Reviews have been conducted at Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories (LLNL and LANL, respectively).

Y-12 Final Corrective Action Plan: The final corrective action plans to address findings identified during the comprehensive inspection conducted in November 2003 are being reviewed for adequacy. A response will be developed and provided to management next week.

National Training Center (NTC) Curriculum Special Study: Plans are under development for supporting this special study. A tele-conference was conducted this week NTC personnel to further define the scope of this study.

Nevada Test Site (NTS) Comprehensive Inspection: Initial planning for this inspection was initiated this week with the identification of topic team resources, and discussions on other administrative and logistical issues.

Office of Cyber Security Evaluations (OA-20)

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) Unclassified Cyber Security Inspection: Negotiations continued this week to resolve issues regarding testing procedures.

Nevada Test Site (NTS) Unannounced Cyber Security Penetration Testing: Onsite validation and closeout activities were conducted this week. The unannounced testing involved network penetration testing from the Internet, evaluation of computer modems in auto answer mode, detection of wireless networking devices, and an internal assessment to evaluate protections against a malicious insider.

Office of Emergency Management Oversight (OA-30)

Hanford Emergency Management Targeted Review: Onsite data collection was completed this week. Onsite validation and closeout activities are scheduled. The emergency management inspection will focus on performance testing and DOE line management readiness assurance programs. Tabletop performance testing was conducted as part of the review.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Emergency Management Targeted Review: The final report is being developed for distribution. Briefings have been scheduled for the Office of Science.

Office of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Evaluations (OA-40)

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) ES&H Inspection: Planning continued this week in support of this inspection. Activities have been coordinated with the Office of Science (SC) and the EH Office of Enforcement.

Office of Safeguards and Security Evaluations (OA-10)

GAO Review of DOE Protective Forces: Met with GAO auditors to discuss a review of DOE protective forces to determine the current status of morale, facilities, investigations, and force member's perception of site security. GAO has asked OA, SO, and headquarters program offices to review the questionnaire for technical accuracy and appropriateness.

Security Under Fire Video: Presented the Security Under Fire Video to the US Marine Corps (USMC) Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL) at Quantico this week. The purpose of the meeting was to raise USMC understanding of domestic adversary capabilities. MCWL provided information and demonstrations on emerging warfighting technology.

NNSA Special Study: Met with Admiral Mies' Panel to provide information on the strengths of DOE security programs. The Panel was most interested in vulnerability assessment methodologies.

Office of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Evaluations (OA-40)

Investigation of Worker Tank Vapor Exposures and Occupational Medicine Services at Hanford: A report containing the results of the investigation has been prepared and presented to the Secretary.

Ambulatory Accreditation Program: The Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) awarded the INEEL, Directorate of Occupational Medicine with a 3-year term of accreditation. The AAAHC survey took place on February 25-26, 2004.
