Becoming a Member

Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination and is conferred in one of two ways. Full Membership is conferred upon any individual who has shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science or engineering. Associate Membership is available to any individual who has, through initial research achievement in a field of pure or applied science, shown an aptitude for research. Please see the Qualifications for Membership for more information. Students and non-students follow the same review process.

Individuals who were previously elected as an Associate Member, who now meet the requirements for Full Membership can apply for Promotion to Full Membership.

Individuals can request nomination to membership through a Sigma Xi chapter or through the Sigma Xi Committee on Qualifications and Membership.

To request nomination through a chapter, please fill out either this Word or PDF nomination form and present it to any officer of the selected chapter. To locate a chapter officer, call the administrative office at 919-549-4691, 800-243-6534 or consult the chapter listing.

Nomination through the Committee on Qualifications and Membership should be submitted to the administrative offices using this online nomination form. The Committee can act as first and second nonimator or if a first nominator is included on the form, a member of the Committee can act as second nominator. Results of the review will be sent via e-mail in approximately 3 weeks.
