University of Southern California shares new publication, "You Want to be an IRB Community Member...Now What?" was highlighted in the October 2007 issue of IRB Advisor with an expected print date in early 2008. Because we are perfectionists, we just now completed this effort and are pleased to announce that it is FINALLY ready for distribution.

At present we will only be distributing this booklet in hard copy via US mail although in several months we will post on our website. Please send your request with mailing information and to oprs@usc.edu and USC/OPRS will mail you a copy.

Ensuring Community-Level Research Protections
University of Washington shares new publication. Community-Campus Partnerships for Health announces new publication, Ensuring Community-Level Research Protections, based on the recent six-part Educational Conference Call Series on Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and Ethical Issues in Research co-sponsored in partnership with the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care. The report is intended as a resource and discussion piece for a wide variety of groups interested in learning about community-level research protections from unique perspectives. Community-based organizations involved in research, community-institutional research partnerships, IRBs, research ethics boards and community advisory boards will be especially interested in this report.

The report includes:

Introduction and overview of current challenges in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and ethical issues in research.
Overview and presentation summaries for each of the six educational conference calls.
First-person stories from diverse communities and community-campus partnerships tackling ethical issues in research.
Guidance for what you can do as a community member, IRB administrator/chair/member, or researcher to take action on the report.
Call series themes, implications, and next steps.
An extensive list of resources, including publications, organizations and websites.

The report can also be downloaded for free from the CCPH homepage at www.ccph.info. The full collection of audiofiles, Powerpoint presentations, and speaker biographies from the call series can be accessed at http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/irbcalls2.html.

Provides direct web links to each country's Key Organizations and laws, whenever available. OHRP believes this Compilation will help IRBs, researchers, and others to meet regulatory requirements to assure that research studies comply with applicable law.

CFR 45 Part 46, Protection of Human Subjects
A revised, up-to-date version of the HHS regulations for the protection of human subjects. This updated version includes the following technical amendments to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects that were announced in the FEDERAL REGISTER on June 23, 2005:

Changing references to the "Office for Protection from Research Risks" to "Office for Human Research Protections, or any successor office"
Changing the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) control number for the Paperwork Reduction Act clearance from "9999-0020" to the current number "0990-0260"
Rewording the footnote to section 45 CFR 46.101(i) to reflect the 2001 change in Subpart B of 45 CFR part 46 that made the exemptions described in section 101(b) applicable to research covered by subpart B.
