MEETING SCHEDULED ON EMERGING ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN FOOD BORNE ENTERIC PATHOGENS

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS); the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM); the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancement, College of Veterinary Medicine, and Georgia Center for Continuing Education are hosting a meeting entitled "Emerging Antibiotic Resistance in Food Borne Enteric Pathogens: Epidemiology, Public Health Risks, and Control Strategies" (#36681). The meeting will be held August 31 - September 3, 1998, in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens, Georgia. The purpose of the meeting is for an international panel of experts to discuss and expand the breadth and depth of current knowledge; to discuss concerns from veterinary, public health, and industry perspectives; and to explore the further development of antimicrobial resistance monitoring.

The session on "Public Health Perspectives," which was organized by CVM’s Drs. Marissa Miller and Linda Tollefson, will focus on the impact of food borne disease on the human population. Additional sessions include: animal health, update on monitoring programs, epidemiology of food borne pathogens, approaches for prevention and control, and use of antimicrobics and associated risks.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is located on the campus of the University of Georgia. The registration fee for the conference is $350.00, and this includes refreshment breaks, lunch, an evening social/poster session, proceedings, and banquet. Openings are still available, but preregistration is highly recommended. To register by phone, contact the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, (706) 542-2134 or (800) 884-1381.
