NSAID Page Posted on the CVM Website

FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has posted a new Veterinary Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) page on the CVM website at: http://www.fda.gov/cvm/nsaids.htm.

NSAIDs are used to control the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Inflammation - the body’s response to irritation or injury - is characterized by redness, warmth, swelling, and pain.  NSAIDs work by blocking the production of prostaglandins, the body chemicals that cause inflammation.

In veterinary medicine, approved veterinary NSAIDs are used to control the pain of osteoarthritis in dogs and some veterinary NSAIDs are approved for the control of postoperative pain in dogs.  NSAIDs offer great relief for many dogs, yet dog owners need to be aware that problems can arise when their pet is receiving an NSAID.  There are risks and benefits with all commonly prescribed veterinary drugs, including NSAIDs.

All NSAIDs approved for oral use in dogs come with a Client Information Sheet (also known as the Information for Dog Owner Sheet) that describes the drug’s side effects.  Client Information Sheets provide dog owners with important information in a user-friendly manner regarding what can be expected from use of the drug and what side effects to look for.

The new Veterinary NSAID webpage includes links to package inserts and Client Information Sheets for NSAIDs approved for oral use in dogs at: http://www.fda.gov/cvm/currentlabels.html.

The page also has links to other information about NSAIDs including:
