UPDATE ON CVM's ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE WORKSHOP

CVM's third public meeting to discuss important issues related to antimicrobial resistance (AR) in food-producing animals will be held for three days instead of two and will include an additional topic -- pathogen load. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, February 22 – 24, 2000, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Double Tree Hotel, 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852.

This workshop will be held to discuss the appropriate designs for pre-approval studies to evaluate the microbial effects of antimicrobial drugs intended for use in food-producing animals. Such studies should address the rate and extent of resistance development and changes in the number of enteric bacteria in the animal's intestinal tract that cause human illness (pathogen load). CVM seeks scientific input from experts on these issues as well as suggestions for alternative approaches.

Study concepts for modeling resistance development and/or pathogen load changes will be presented on February 22 and February 23. These concepts, as well as suggested alternative approaches, will be discussed during subsequent breakout groups and open comment periods on February 23 and 24.

Registration for the workshop is free, however registration is required. Space is limited, and early registration is encouraged. For general information regarding the workshop, please contact Lynda W. Cowatch, FDA/Center for Veterinary Medicine (HFV-150), 7500 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855, 301-827-5281. For technical inquiries, please contact Dr. William Flynn at 301-827-7570. Interested individuals also may wish to visit the CVM Internet Home Page for further information concerning this workshop, including the agenda. When making reservations with the DoubleTree Hotel, please refer to the "CVM Antimicrobial Resistance Public Meetings", to receive the group discount rate.
